The recent difficulty experienced by Mr. Abdoulaye Balde, the Mayor of Ziguinchorr, in entering the Gambia from Senegal has given sharp focus to the border closure.
The mayor and his entourage had to turn back when border police intercepted them leading to their return.
If such elected officials could find it difficult to move across borders, how much more those transporting goods.
The border closure is having untold negative impact on the economies of both Gambia and Senegal since the Gambia shares border with Senegal on its eastern, northern and southern parts. Border closures must have a devastating impact on its economy. The longer it takes to find a remedy to the border closure, the more the economy of the two countries would shrink in relative terms.
