2016 will be remembered as the most eventful period in Gambia’s political history. For the first time in Gambia’s history, viable presidential candidates from different political parties have decided to subject themselves to a convention in order to give way for one of them to stand as a flagbearer in order to overcome the advantages given to the incumbent due to the absence of a second round of voting.
In the same vein, the presence of both genders in criss-crossing the country to seek nomination as a presidential candidate for 2016 has also been evident. Whether or not the female presidential aspirant will bow down in favour of the coalition, her mere presence in the campaign field is a historical event.
The presidential election is now weeks away. Nomination is taking place between the 7th and 9th November. It may be a very tight race between three or four presidential aspirants, By Monday, 7th November 2016, Gambians will know for sure who will be vying for the presidency.
IEC has already issued a notice giving nomination dates to four presidential aspirants. On Monday, they are likely to give the nation the news regarding any withdrawal of prospective candidature.
