Fire Destroys Goods Worth D4.5 Million at Banjul Market

Fire destroys D4.5 Million worth of goods at Banjul Market during the fireBanjul Market outbreak on Tuesday 23rd September 2014. This information is confirmed by the Banjul Disaster Coordinator after conducting an investigation from the 3 victims.

According to the victims, the fire was noticed by about 1:20 pm and it was raging for many hours before it was finally put off by fire fighters.

Mr. Hudul E.N Colley confirmed from stall owners that, 3 big stalls and goods worth D4.5 million were destroyed by the raging fire.

Mr. Colley said the stall owners are Korka Sowe who claims that he lost goods worth D2 million from his stall. He said the second victim said is called Amadou Jallow who claims to have lost D1.5 Million dalasi worth of goods and the third one is one Mr.Alhagie Ebrima Camara who claims to have lost D1 Million worth of goods.

Mr. Colley said that Alhagie Ebrima Camara the 3rd Victim retrieved a cash sum of D48, 000 in a plastic bag.

“The cause of the fire according to the victims, was said to have been caused by electricity, but this is not yet established because I am still liaising with NAWEC and the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services for the exact cause of the Fire as they are the experts that can give out the proper cause,” said Mr. Mr. Hudul E.N Colley, Banjul Disaster Coordinator.
