Lasana Jobarteh, a supporter of the opposition United Democratic Party Lasana Jobarteh(UDP), who was earlier ordered by the Bundung Magisrates’ Court on 10th July 2014 to pay a fine of D50.000 or in default to serve 1 year in prison, has yesterday, 20th November, 2014 appealed against his conviction at the Special Criminal Division of the High Court before Justice Emmanuel Amadi.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Hadi Saleh Barkum represented the state whilst the appellant, who was not in court, was represented by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe. Both counsels, Darboe and the DPP approached the beach before the commencement of the case.
Lawyer Darboe informed the court that appellant has travelled to the provinces and that he is there to represent him as legal counsel. “My lord there is a motion to regularize the appeal and I will file it in the afternoon,” said counsel Darboe.
The DPP, in response, told the court that they are opposing the appeal and that he has an affidavit written which will be filed.
The trial judge, at this juncture, adjourned the case to 16th December, 2014 at 2pm for continuation of hearing.
Mr. Jobarteh was earlier convicted and sentenced by magistrate Isatou Janneh of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court.
