By Mustapha Jallow in Kanifing Municipality – 7pm, 30 Dec 2014
As reports of an attempted military coup started circulating, soldiers
were not seen in the streets of the largest urban settlement in Gambiawhile people were moving about unrestricted.
Apart from the capital city of Banjul, where vehicles are not allowed
to enter or leave, the situation in the Kanifing Municipality is very
calm, although fewer people and vehicles are seen in the streets.
When this reporter was out and about in the streets of Serekunda, he
observed that the Police stations were operating normally and that
there was no sign of restriction of the movement of vehicles or people
on the roads.
It was also observed that apart from the corner street grocery shops
or “Bitiki Narr”, small, medium and big businesses were all closed
such as tailoring shops, welding workshops, retail stores, banks, etc.
When contacted to shed light on the developments, Lt. Malick Sanyang,
THE Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Public Relation Officer (PRO), said he
has noticed a heavy security presence at Denton Bridge restricting
civilians from entry. The GAF PRO however assured that he will give more information as soon as it becomes clear.
