WHAT WILL PRESIDENT JAMMEH OFFER ON THE 18NFEBRUARY THAT IS DIFFERENT?

Since the state is planning a commemoration to mark the 50th
anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1965 one must wonder
what the president would say or do to make the day memorable. Will he make a promise not to serve another term? Will he promise to
initiate a bill to introduce a term limit to the presidency?  Will he
work to restore a second round in voting if a presidential candidate
does not have more than 50 percent of the votes cast? Will he open up
the media to divergent views and dissenting opinion? Will he restore
the invitation of the special rapporteurs on torture and extrajudicial
killings to finish their investigation? Will he announce the
establishment of a human rights commission? Will he appear with ex
President Jawara and propose a joint initiative to put an end to two
to three decades rule under one president? At least the commemoration
should not be empty fanfare. It should yield concrete results on how
to avoid the mistakes of the past 50 years.
  Time will tell!
