DO PRISONERS HAVE RIGHTS? THE ROLE OF PRISON VISITING COMMITTEES

Prison visiting Committees are established to look after the welfare of prisoners. Prisoners should be informed of their right to meet and lodge their complaints with the prison visiting committees for action.

Family members have asked Foroyaa what the rights of a prisoner are after a sentence of death is commuted to life imprisonment. Is the person entitled to prison visits?

Foroyaa will approach the Chairpersons of the prison visiting Committees and the Director General of Prisons to find out what they have to say before explaining what the Prisons Act and Regulations say.

Deprivation of the right to freedom of movement is enough punishment. To deprive a person of interpersonal relationships is inhuman. No justification could be given for preventing visitors from visiting prisoners no matter the weight of a crime committed.
