HARUNA GASSAMA, CRR RICE FARMERS’ COOPERATIVE PRESIDENT IN DETENTION FOR 106 DAYS WILL VISION 2016 INCLUDE AN END TO DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL FOR FARMERS?

Haruna Gassama was unanimously elected as the President of CRR Rice
Farmers’ Cooperative and expressed his determination to ensure
transparency and accountability in managing the affairs of the societyso that they could have a bumper harvest in the coming season.
One would have thought that any government which is
interested in the increase in rice production would have given full
support to Haruna and the cooperative he now leads.
Instead, he was put in custody since Monday 2nd March 2015.  The rainy
season is fast approaching. The farmers should now be in the field.
Why is Haruna detained without trial? What purpose is it serving? How
is the detention serving agricultural development? Impunity in this
case undermines the confidence of the farming community. No farmer
should be detained without trial during the farming season. To do so
is to display a lack of commitment to the goal of self sufficiency in
agricultural production.
