DRIVE TOWARDS FOOD SELF SUFFICIENCY? NO CAUSE TO CELEBRATE

In 2012 Gambia imported 140,672 tons of rice at a cost of 1.4 Billion dalasis. In 2013 the country imported 130,226 tons of rice at a cost of 1.1 Billion dalasis. In 2014 the country imported 140,411 tons of rice at a cost of 1.9 Billion.

We are not heading towards food self sufficiency; on the contrary, we are more dependent on food imports. The price of food is rising.

Food self sufficiency and security are far from being attained.

We should be honest enough to call a spade a spade.
