2 FARMERS IN CRR ARRESTED, ONE LATER RELEASED

By Mustapha Jallow

Two farmers from Mbayen Village in the Niamina East District of the Central River Region (CRR) have been arrested by the Police and detained at the Jarreng Police Station; a reliable source informed this paper.

According to the source, the two who are Sulay Mbye, an elderly person, and Alagi Morr Mbye, a young boy, were arrested on Sunday, 27 July, 2014, at around 9am by the Police in CRR while they were said to be cultivating on their farms.

However, when Mr. Ebrima Cham, the CRR Regional Police Commissioner, was contacted, he confirmed the arrest of the two and said it was effected following their breach of an order by the District Tribunal over an allocated land of which they are claiming ownership.

When asked whether one of the two who arrestees, Alagi Moor Mbye, is not an underage, Commissioner Cham said he is not aware of that.

It could be recalled that 17 women from the same village were arrested and detained at the Jarreng police station on the 22 July 2014 and of whom five were later released and replaced in detention by their husbands. According to the police commissioner, they were all released on police bail the following day after their cautionary statements were taken.

As we go to press, this medium was reliably informed that Alagi Morr Mbye was released unconditionally on Sunday, 27 July 2014.

Sulay Mbye is still in detention.
