President Denis Sassou Nguesso has been in office from 1979 to 1992 and from 1997 to date. The Constitution of Congo Brazzaville like that of Congo Kinshasa established term limit. The importance of term limit is to enable countries to develop a culture of peaceful transfer of power which has eluded many countries, including the Gambia since Independence.
Unfortunately , greed has compelled the leaders of both countries to struggle to change their constitutions and eliminate the term limits.
This past Sunday, the regime subjected the changes to eliminate the term limit to a referendum. It is claimed that 72.4 percent of the registered voters voted and 93 percent voted. Human beings cannot live forever. Hence every presidency has a term limit.
Since no human being is omniscient, each should acknowledge that to lead in succession and promote competition among the different presidents is likely to serve the interest of the masses much more than to have a ruler for life. This tends to lead to the absolutism of power and impunity.
Why should leaders who lead their countries to become heavily indebted poor countries consider it a divine right to rule for life?
However, West Africa appears to be leading the continent in terms of the establishment of a term limit. Out of all the ECOWAS states, it is only Gambia and Togo are the exception.
