Gambia’s referee, Papa Gassama, was yesterday evening voted as Africa’s Best Referee of the Year in Abuja, Nigeria.
The record-making Bakary Papa Gassama, who won the award last year, was one of four nominees vying for the gong.
The Glo-Caf awards was staged in Nigeria, Abuja yesterday evening
Gassama, the first Gambian to officiate in World Cup match last year, competed Alioum Neant of Cameroon, Gabon’s Eric Arnaud Otogo Castane, Egypt’s Ghead Zaglol Grisha,
and Janny Sikazwe of Zambia for the prestigious silverware.
In a year that has seen his grades blossom, the 37-year-old reached new heights when he became the first African to oversee a Qatar Stars’ League game.
