Section 33 of the constitution says “that all persons shall be equal before the law”. No person has a right to take the law into his or her own hands. No body should force a person to leave his or her home and put him or her in a bus and transport him or her to an unknown destination against his or her will only to compel him or her to drink hallucinogenic concoctions. Any body who is subjected to such inhuman and degrading treatment has the right to the following redress:
Section 37 {1} reads;
“If any person alleges that any of his or her fundamental rights are contravened he may apply to the High court for redress.” This is the moment for human rights lawyers to come to the service of the citizenry and serve them without asking for money. In all parts of the world there are civil liberties unions which avail citizens in distress legal services to enable them access to legal redress of grievances pertaining to fundamental rights and freedoms. We hope such institutions will make their mark in the Gambia to protect the rights of our disadvantaged citizens.
