The health education unit of the Department of State for Health recently organised a one day sensitisation workshop on health sanitation and hygiene for teachers drawn from three pilot schools in the Kanifing Municipality. The three pilot schools are Tallinding proper, Tallinding Annex and New Jeshwang Primary. The workshop was held at the Tallinding Proper Lower Basic School in Tallinding. The aim of the workshop was to promote sanitation and hygiene education in schools.

Presenting on waste management, Sheikh Omar Dibba, a retired health worker and consultant said teachers should be involved in the promotion of health and hygiene issues in schools because they are important elements in the school and society. He said the role of teachers in hygiene education and promotion is very vital, noting that they should teach students the implications of health hazards posed by improper waste management.
He noted that certain diseases are non prevalent in communities were waste management is effective. He said waste does not come from the sky, but that it is generated by people in society. Mr. Dibba urged for every house hold to have Dustin including schools and communities so as to reduce health hazards in our environment.
He added that teachers at schools should advocate for change at the school level in terms of environment hygiene and sanitation. “Push for change in a discipline manner”.
Mr. Dibba revealed that there are three main factors that affect our population; namely birth rate, migration and mortality. He said these three things are prevalent in the country. He said adequate health services would improve survival change in terms of death in the country.
Xarro Bah-deputy programme manager, health education unit, said people should change their attitudes on issues pertaining to food hygiene. He talked about the way food is sold in the streets especially in the evening. He urged the public to know the type of food they buy and eat”. Other presenters presented on the issue of hygiene, water management and personal hygiene.
