Taking his plea, Mr. Olyehi who was not represented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He further told the court that he wanted to inflict wounds on himself, but not to commit suicide.
Reading the facts before court, prosecutor Badjie said on 17 July 2009 around 10pm at Manjai Kotu Highway, the accused went to a shop and asked the shopkeeper whether he has a knife for sale.
Badjie said the shopkeeper told the accused person that he does not sell knife. He added that moments later the accused person emerged again and asked the shopkeeper to lend him a knife; noting that he had looked for a knife, but it was not available for sale in any shop in the area.
After receiving the knife from the shopkeeper, prosecutor Badjie told the court that the accused person went to Bayo restaurant along Kotu highway and started to stab himself with a knife.
According to Badjie, the accused person was seen by a lady who rushed to Manjai police station where a police officer left to visit the scene and found the accused bleeding. Badjie further added that the accused was taken to a police station and later to Serrekunda hospital where he received treatment. He explained having been treated at the said medical facility, the accused person was returned to Manjai police station where he was cautioned and subsequently charged.
The case was adjourned to 17 August 2009 for continuation of hearing.
