Marriage & Family : ‘HEBATEH’ (He Went Too Far)
By Amie Sillah on 17-11-09 (372 reads) News by the same author

Alh Bashir is a descendant of Kings. He should have contested for the throne but his preference is business. He became a business tycoon in the sub region. He sells food items, readymade clothes and materials of all sorts; building materials and household utensils. Alhajj is into every lucrative business.
Fate is not kind to Alhajj. He lost his wife, Aja Ndumbeh to Asthma, and his ‘Taw’ (eldest) son Harjata to Leukamia (blood cancer). His surviving daughter Ma Horejah is also inflicted with Asthma.
Alhajj refused to marry a second wife. His excuse being he does not want a step mother to come and maltreat Ma Hor. “When she is married I’ll consider remarrying another wife. But for now, I want everyone to help me nurse my ‘baby’.” He told friends, relatives and household servants. Ma is an intelligent Lass. She excelled from Nursing to University. She studied pharmacy.
Alhajj has a ‘God father’ in Business. He introduced him to the act and lent him a starting capital. He excelled and became a business tycoon himself.
Alhajj Bukari resides in a neighboring state. He never asks any favours from Alh Bashir except now.
His son Isaka, studied civil engineering. He now stays and works in the United States. Alhajj Bukari wants his son to marry Alhajj Bashir’s surviving daughter.
The two children got betrothed to each other by their parents. This move is seen to be cementing the ties between the two great families.
At the beginning, it works. But as the two children grew into adulthood, a beautiful, attractive young lady and a handsome young man, problems began to prop in. Isaka, turned into an arrogant, overbearing, possessive Youngman. Ma Hor turned into a pleasant, easy going young lady. She resonated well with her house servants. She empathized with the wretched of the earth. Her attitude and composure endeared her to her household servants.
Their two characters became incompatible Ma Hor began to resent Issa’s arrogance and haughtiness.
Accidentally, as she almost drowns in a lake she was rescued by a good Samaritan, Omar. She grew fond of him. Their chemistries matched. What happens next? How did the tycoon dad react? Read to find out.

The Shock
The initial arrangement for the ceremony was that Cassidi would have stayed with his best man or the chief male ‘Palaleh’ until in the evening when he would collect Hurrie and take her to the reception venue, where speeches would be delivered and presents given to the couple by relatives, friends and well wishers.
The Islamic marriage rites have already been performed at the central mosque and that what is left now is the festivities to celebrate the marriage.
The Dilemma
Alhajj and Aja decided not to alarm the Ibrahams. They let the news flow naturally.
The Shock
Isaka came in a white ‘Hummer’ Jeep to collect his bride, Ma Horejah. He came with excitement.
He announced his entrance: “The groom have come for his beautiful bride.”
Being unaware of the elopement of the bride, the guests who were already assembled applauded the bridegroom as he entered. The bridegroom started throwing away some dollar notes at the crowd and also the live band that was there providing the entertainment.
He marched majestically into Hurrie’s chambers and found some of her maidens sitting inside.
“Where is my Princess? Where is my Princess?” He asked in a joyful mood.
The maidens looked at each other speechless.
Impatient as he always is, Cassidi shouted “Damn! What is happening? Where is my woman? Are you people here dumb and deaf? Are you not answering me?”
“Just take it easy with them. It’s okay,” counselled Arona, his best man, who was behind him.
Hanna went out to call Alhajj and Cassidi followed her.
“What is happening?” He barged into Alhajj’s chambers at the presence of Aja Hancha.
“Where is my woman? What is happening? Are you playing pranks with me? I want an answer before I hurt someone! Damn it! Bullshit!” he yelled in an arrogant mood..
Arona stood by his side calming him down. “You have asked a question, wait for your in-laws’ answer. They owe you an explanation. But you also have to be calm.”
“Calm down, please?” he advised.
“I demand for an explanation!” Cassidi ordered.
Alhajj and Aja shed emotional tears. “The Princess has disappeared!”
“With who? Where? How?” came successive questions from Cassidi.
“This is what we intend to investigate.” Alhajj said.
“I hope it is not that pauper of a boy. I swear I’ll kill him. He had dared me too much!” said an enraged Cassidi.
Alhajj Sends Messengers To Omar’s Home
Metoo and some servants were sent to Omar’s home. The duo were no where to be found.
“What is the problem? I have not seen my son the whole day. I only hope he has not done something stupid.” Tanta lamented.
“You are in trouble. Alhajj and Cassidi are coming for you to replace your son in prison. You better get lost,” threateningly advised Metoo. “Not over my life! Get lost for what? What crime have I committed? How can you come to the conclusion that my son is with the Princess?
Go to hell! I would not be intimidated in my town.” Tanta verbally fought back. The messenger left.
The Feed Back
“The Princess and the boy are no where to be found. Apparently, the boy’s mother knows nothing about the matter. Metoo explained to Alhajj and Cassidi.
The Reaction
“He is her son. If his mom is held in custody, he would show up with the Princess to free his mom.”
“A good idea!” Cassidi concurred.
Meanwhile, Alhajj Bokar was in the dark. He did not hear from Bashir or Cassidi. “What is happening?” He asked his son.
“My important V.I.P guests are being kept waiting.”
“Dad! There is a problem. We are trying to fix it. I’ll get in touch with you, the soonest.”
“I hope everything is fine? Is the Princess fine?”
“Yes dad. She is.” Cassidi lied.
He is a blunt person. He hated to tell a lie.
The Arrest
Alhajj got the police to arrest Tanta until her son appears with Hurrie.
Human Right Lawyers
The coalition of Human Right Lawyers Representative intervened and got Tanta released. The coalition argued that it is a violation of Tanta’s rights; that Omar is a man who has taken charge of his destiny; that his mom had nothing to do with the incident. Tanta regained her freedom and praised the Coalition and what she called Allah’s divine intervention.
Alhajj Bakari’s Reaction
Later on, Alhajj got the whole picture. He felt slapped at the face. He blamed his confidante and friend for not getting him into the picture earlier on. “I enquired and you told me all our arrangements were on course. But that is false. My son, Cassidi, had been besieged with problems since he arrived in the country. The Princess rejected him. You should have told me. Look at the embarrassment you have put my family into?” He chided Alh. Bashir. (A good lie is better than a bad truth.) Let us disperse the crowd. Tell them we are bereaved. That I lost my only surviving sister in Nigeria.” The trick worked. The crowd dispersed in grief.
Cassidi Leaves For The State
Cassidi was devastated. “I have lost my woman to a pauper! I have been rejected for a poor wretched of the earth! “He wept bitterly. His ego is shattered.
He blamed his dad.
“Dad! You caused me the shit! You forced me to marry your betrothee. I had my plans. You foiled it. Look at the shit you put me into! I hate you dad! I hate you! I questioned the rationale but you say everything is okay! Look at it now! Look at it! I am going back to the States right away. Arona had secured a seat for me. I’ll never come back to Africa. I’ll marry in the U.S and stay there. Good bye dad for your poor judgment.
Thank you for breaking my heart.” Cassidi packed his suitcase and left with a mid night plane back to the US.
