At the Hospital
“Doctor, is it that at two months it threatened abortion? And now it is this? What type of calamity is this?” she wailed.
“No! No! Pull yourself together. Just be prepared for all eventualities. But we will do our best.” The doctor counseled Tanta.
“Your son should be here. It is important,” continued the Doctor.
“Oh! He just left yesterday,” said Tanta.
“Honestly Madam, it is necessary.” The Doctor insisted.
“Okay! I think I have to call and ask his friend to call him immediately.”
“Please do that. It is very important. There are some documents which he needs to sign as husband before we can carry on with the D and C,” explained the doctor.
“Okay doctor, I’ll do that.”
“Come to visit her from time to time.”
It’s okay.”
Mama left to make the call.
Mama At The Ward
Saul came to the ward after he received Mama’s call. “Mama, what is the problem? Is she undergoing labour?” Saul asked.
“No Saul, this is a labour with a difference. Her pregnancy is barely six months old.” “What did the doctor say is the problem?” he asked.
“She had about of malaria last week and the doctor said that is what caused it.”
Hurrie was in intense pain. She twisted and turned in bed.
“Is Omar informed?”
“Not yet. That is even what I want you to do that for us. The doctor asked me to inform him, but I don’t want to make him panic.”
Saul Informs Omar
He came in a jiffy as soon as Saul called him. He confronted Tanta. He is very angry with her.
“Listen to me first before judging me. You need to get relaxed first, as you are coming from a long journey,” Tanta advised Omar.
“Did she tell you we have not been taking good care of her?” she asked.
“No! It’s just that I don’t like the fact that she is in the hospital all along by herself. I don’t like her to be alone,” he protested.
“So what are we to do now? Do you want to trek to the hospital? It’s already late now. Why don’t you just relax now and think straight,” advised Tanta.
She continued “We have been taking care of her. Just relax. I’ll tell you everything.”
“Okay! How did it start? Contractions at six months, what does it signify?” asked an anxious Omar.
“Well! The doctor said its premature contraction.”
“So my wife is going to have a premature delivery. Is that what it means?” Omar became impatient.
“No! Let me get you something to eat first. You are tired and exhausted from the long journey.”
“No! I’ll not eat, while my wife is in labour pain in the hospital. I want to know what I need to know. Tell me what I want to know.” He yelled.
“Nothing much happened. It’s just that she had malaria a few days ago.”
“I left my wife here with you mom and you let her have malaria. How is that possible? he complaint.
“Omar, do I see Malaria? Or am I the one who transmit malaria into her?”
“But I left the responsibility to you to take care of her. You are supposed to direct her; show her what to do. Did you get malaria all the time you get pregnant? I don’t think so. So prevent it!” he scolded.
“Omar! Stop pestering me. Who is in this country who does not know how to prevent malaria?” protested Tanta.
“For her, she does not know how and that’s why I left her under your care, mother. You are the only mother in this house. How could you not prevent malaria?”
“I think you need to sleep,” suggested Tanta.
“I don’t need anything. I know what I need. Don’t tell me that,” he snapped.
Omar got up and left.
Tanta softened. “Boy! I understand how you feel. But take it easy on yourself and at me. I did my best. You must appreciate it. Don’t castigate me. Your wife is a good woman. She is part of the family.”
At The Hospital
Omar went to the hospital and slept on the chairs.
Omar Wakes Up
Omar woke up and saw the doctor standing in front of him. He greeted the doctor and introduced himself.
“Let me tell you something. Go round and get some money. I mean good money, because the D and C is due first thing tomorrow morning, that is if the contraction persists.”
“Doctor…” He started to explain. Docter is tired. He wanted to go home to have some snap.
“We are talking about some D20, 000 (twenty thousand dalasi) here. Twenty thousand dalasi, that’s it.”
The doctor instructed the nurse at the reception to tell those nurses in the theatre/operating room to prepare Hurrie for the D and C if the contraction persists.
Omar engaged him in conversation to explain his predicament.
The doctor scolded him. “Don’t you have some human feelings? Look at me! I was on my feet for the last 12 hours performing various types of operation. I am now tired and cannot perform operations in the morning. Go and raise the money for your wife. She is in safe hands. Just relax! Good night!” He hurriedly left Omar.
At The Hospital
Sabel was left to stay in the hospital, whilst mama went home to prepare a warm pepper soup for Hurrie.
Omar Arrives
He rudely woke the snoring Sabel, who was fast asleep in the chair. She hissed and protested.
“You are sleeping, how can you take care of a patient? You rather go to sleep on your bed than sleep in the hospital,” he scolded.
Hurrie calmed him down. “It’s okay. She is tired. She has just fallen asleep now. You know she is a small girl, so just take it easy with her. You people are very hard with her. You need to appreciate her efforts.”
“No! Let her go away,” Omar ordered.
“Just leave them. She and Mama are ungrateful. They don’t appreciate what I do. Leave them! They don’t care about their naggings.”
“If you know how angry I am, then you will not tell me this nonsense,” Omar yelled.
“Bounce on me now! Bounce on me if I would become a football,” Sabel hissed.
Hurrie asked Sabel to leave as she scolded Omar. Hurrie asked for the inhaler. Omar instructed Sabel to get the inhaler. She hesitated, but then decided to do it for the sake of Hurrie. Omar pulled it from her hand and applied it on his wife.
