Disability : School for the visually impaired needs specialists

The school for the visually impaired needs specialist teachers, said Mr Alieu Jaiteh, a partially sighted teacher.
He said even though all the teachers of the said school are holders of Higher Teachers’ Certificate; they need further training to become Special Needs teachers.
“To be a Special Needs teacher, one should needs special training,” he said .
Mr Jaiteh said in order for visually impaired children to receive quality education, the capacity of their teachers need to be enhanced.
He added that the teaching of Mathematics to visually impaired children requires special skills.

Disability : NUDY to Hold Congress Before 30th June

The National Union of Disabled Youth (NUDY) will hold its congress before 30th June 2010, said Mr. Ebrima Dibassey, the Union’s president.
According to him, financial constrains and attempts to review the union’s constitution halted the congress form happening at an earlier date.
He, however, said the two aforesaid factors have been dealt with.
The NUDY president made these remarks recently.

In this continuation of interview, Wuli East National Assembly Member Honourable Bekai Camara calls on Gambia Government to invest more to the education of persons with disabilities.
Foroyaa: How did your dream of becoming a journalist come true?
Camara: It was not an easy task at all, given that I only had a secondary school certificate. This was at a time when O’ and A’ level certificate holders were in demand. My passage through many hands and voluntary training helped me a lot. During my time as a broadcaster, I did well. Even though, I was not the best.
Foroyaa: Where did you start your journalistic career?
Camara: I started my journalistic practice at the then Gambia Weekly, now known as Gambia Info. This was back in 1987, while I began work at the information office in 1988, August.
I started as a freelance journalist and was later employed as a staff. Having spent some time at the newspaper, I was transferred to the Radio.
