Following continuous reports that businessmen who sell commodities like sugar above certain prices are actually arrested and taken to court this reporter had to conduct investigation as to whether the government has a price control policy or not. .This reporter therefore decided to approach the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Employment to find out whether there exist a new Price Control Act and if so, whether it was gazetted and the gazette number.

FAWEGAM (Forum for African Women Educationists, the Gambia Chapter) held its Five Days Girls’ Camp from 30th August 2010 to 3rd September 2010 at the Girls’ Guide Headquarters in Kanifing.
50 girls from Greater Banjul and Western Region ranging from ages 14- 16 years attended, few 10 year olds also attended; they are from the Upper Basic Cycle.
Aunty Aminata Sillah-Sarr was the Guest Speaker at the Girls’ Camp. She discussed issues such as Empowerment, Challenges faced by Girl Children, Benefits of Girls Education, Discipline and about herself.

National News : Human Rights Defender Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment

The Director of African Democracy and Good Governance Edwin Nebolisa Nwakame was on Monday sentenced by Magistrate Abeke of Banjul Magistrates’ Court to a mandatory jail term of six months imprisonment with hard labour. A fine of D10, 000 was also imposed on the defendant in default to serve three years in prison with hard labour.
The trial magistrate further ordered that the defendant is banned from running or operating any form of organisation in the Gambia, but however said the accused has the right to appeal against his judgment.

Mr. Kebba Susso a native for Basse Mansajang Kunda and a Commissioner of oaths was reported to have been arrested and detained at the Basse Police Station for at least an hour. The reasons for the arrest and subsequent detention of Mr. Susso was of concern to many residents of Basse and the rumour was that it was it was in connection to an allegation he is reported to have made against the governor of URR Alhagie Omar Khan.

National News : DR MBOWE REPORTED TO BE RELEASED

Information reaching this paper has it that Dr Tamsir Mbowe was arrested by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Upon receiving the information, this reporter visited Mbowen Clinic at Kanifing to ask for him.
However, this reporter was told that Dr Mbowe was not at the Clinic but at home. A source reported that Dr Mbowe was released after his arrest and could be reached at home to confirm that he is not under detention as rumoured.
Efforts to reach Dr Mbowe proved futile as his Gamcel Line always states the following: “This is Dr Mbowe, I am not available at the moment, please leave your message and I will get back to you”. This reporter left a message but up to the time of going to press no feedback was received from him.

The president of the Republic was last week heard on GRTS television saying that he would supply hundred cattle to be slaughtered in the Kanifing Municipality for the Muslim feast, locally called ‘Laylatul Hadr (kitimo)’, a day that many Muslims in the Gambia observe as a night of vigil for prayers in the month of Ramadan. He said he already has 500 cattle heads and that the target is to keep 1000 cattle in stock so as to supply meat from this day towards the end of Ramadan and Eid el Fitr (Koriteh).
